Mathare Youth throws away vital points
September 14, 2008
Mathare Youth shared the spoils today in a very entertaining encounter against Mahakama at the Nyayo national stadium today. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.
But Mathare Youth will blame themselves for allowing Mahakama to grab a point from them. Mathare Youth had looked to secure all the 3 points but with 1 minute to go Harambee Stars striker Francis Chinjili scored the equaliser.
With both teams still struggling to come out of the bottom of the table, both coaches played a very cautious game in the first half but the match burst into life in the second half. Mathare were the first to score through Francis Ochieng.
They were unlucky when Kennedy Kimani was sent off as the game progressed. Gabriel Njoroge and Leonard Saleh, who are the coaches of Mathare Youth and Mahakam respectively have a herculian task to win a good part of their remaining matches to avoid relegation. A relegation for any of the teams will be disastrous to the them as both teams have very good young and promising players. But they simply have not been able to collect wins consistently. Leonard Saleh ook over from Michael Amenga in Mahakama had rediscovered the winning ways of Mahakama when the team won a couple of matches including beating Ulinzi 2-1 last weekend. They looked set to continue with their winning ways but were checked by Mathare Youth who could have easily beaten them today.
Nandwa not happy with draw
September 14, 2008
Sher Karuturi’s Head Coach James Nandwa is not a happy man. He wanted nothing short of victory to propel them to 31 points when they met World Hope at the Hope Center today. But his boys had to settle for a barren draw with World Hope.
Nandwa, who is also the assistant National team coach told our editor on phone how disappointed he was with the draw. “We had come here to win to boost our chances of finishing in a respectable position. Instead we got a point. The players too were very disappointed with the result but I know they will bounce back and focus on the next assignments. The League is getting tighter and tighter as it comes to an end. Every point now counts.”
The Naivasha based side is currently lying sixth in the standings of 16 teams with a total of 29 points. Both teams missed good scoring chances and at the end of the 90 minutes they had to be content with the result.
Kimanzi has the last laugh in Thika
September 14, 2008
With the battle for the Kenya Premier League racing to the wire, Thika United hosted Mathare United in Thika with the hope to beat them to close in on the leaders who are becoming more and more unreachable, untouchable and furthermore uncontainable.
Thika looked set to beat Mathare as they continued with ferocious attacks which kept their local fans on their toes the whole afternoon. But the killer blow was to come sooner rather than later. It is now becoming clearer and clearer that Kimanzi’s tactical approaches are far too superior than other coaches. He has instilled tactical discipline in his side, never witnessed in any other of the Kenyan Premier League Clubs. The meticulously built up team patiently waits for the right time to strike. Mathare convinces other teams to attack them, leaving so many gaping spaces in their own midfield and defence lines.
Kimanzi has built his team’s way of play around ruthless counterattacks which are executed with lightning speed and accuracy that leaves many teams shocked with the clinical nature of the counters.
It happened again against Thika. Innocent Mutiso scored the all-important goal in the second half. The industrious midfielder scored the all important goal in the second half of the match. Mathare United now seems to be the outright favourites to win the league although Sony Sugars FC is still breathing behind them. Sony also beat Agro-Chemicals 2-0 in Awendo yesterday. But Mathare leads the pack with 4 points more than Sony and it seems the league is Mathare’s to lose. The team that is known for its entertaining style of play has never won the Premier League title before and Kimanzi looks set to break this jinx.
Just a week ago he broke the jinx of Kenya losing to Namibia every time they met. Kenya beat Namibia by 1-0 at Kasarani to book a ticket to the next qualifiers round for the World Cup and the African Cup of Nations in 2010.

Jomo Sono Interested in Kenyan Players
September 7, 2008
South African Soccer millionaire Jomo Sono is interested in at least four players from the Kenyan National side, Harambee Stars. Thanks to the live transmission of the Kenya-Namibia match by Supersport, many people around the continent managed to catch the action live on their screens.
Reliable sources indicate that immediately after the end of the match, Mr Sono made a few phone inquiries to Kenya about the players in a bid to establish their current Clubs’ status. It is said that Mr Sono was so impressed by at least 5 players who turned out for Harambee Stars. The match was televised live by Superspost and KTN.
There are even more chances of more players catching the eyes of international scouts as the team has virtually progressed to the next and final round of World Cup qualifiers.
Draw in Harare brings smiles to Kenyans
September 7, 2008
Zimbabwe and Guinea registered a barren draw in Harare today, giving Kenyan fans all the reasons to smile. With one match left for all the teams in the last round of matches in all the groups, Kenya is topping the group with 10 points followed by Guinea who are on 7 points. The winner of each group qualifies automatically for the second a last round while the 8 best placed runners-up join them.
The result was disastrous for Zimbabwe who now have virtually crushed out of the world cup qualifiers. The result was very welcome for Kenya who have an option of beating Guinea in Conakry to top the group with 13 points, or become one of the best runners up if they lose to Guinea.
Now Kimanzi has taken Kenya to the biggest stage.

Harambee Stars beats Namibian Warriors
September 7, 2008
The Kenyan National Soccer team, Harambee Stars registered a very crucial win yesterday when they beat Namibia’s Warriors 1-0 at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. Jamal Mohammed scored the all-important goal in the 44th minutefrom the spot kick after John Njoroge was brought down in the penalty area by Namibian defender, Collin Benjamin.
The Namibians, who did not have any chance of qualifying for the second round appeared content not to concede any more goals and sat deep in their own half most of the time, opting to wait for the Harambee Stars to come to them and catch the Kenyans on the fast break.
The Kenyan National team coach Francis Kimanzi, however was very cautious and gave firm instructions to his players to keep the ball as long and as efficient as possible. His strategy paid off when the Namibians refused to come forward and win the ball.
The win put Kenya at top of their group with 10 points after five matches. The first match saw the Kenyans losing 2-1 to Namibia in Windhoek. The following matches have seen the Stars posting impressive results. They went on to beat Gunea and Zimbabwe 2-0 in Nairobi, and then picked up a point in Harare after a tense encounter.
Kimanzi has kept his faith with most of the players he had called to the National team during his first appointment. This a big departure from the past where there was a huge turnover rate of players. This has helped in moulding a productive playing unit whereby players get so used to each other and work better as team.
The last game for the first round qualifiers will see Kenya play Guinea in Conakry on the 12th of October 2008. Both teams have a good chance of topping the group and enjoy being seeded in the final round.
Kimanzi has made it clear to his team that he wants nothing short of victory in Guinea and wants the team to have at least 3 weeks of residential training before departing to Guinea.
Argentina kills Africa’s Second gold hopes
August 25, 2008
Angel Di Maria Scored a stunning 58th minute goal to give Argentina a 1-0 win over Nigeria in the finals of the Olympics on last Saturday. Angel, who was guilty of missing two remarkable penalties in an earlier preliminary rounds match against Serbia got a very sweet through pass from Barcelona’s Lionel Messi to tuck the ball into an empty net, chipping it past an advancing Ambruse Vanzekin and sending Argentinian fans into an ecstatic celebration.
The match was played at the famous Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing China. The win denied Nigeria a second gold medal in the Olympics Football Finals. Nigeria coincidentally won the gold medal in 1996 when they beat Argentina 3-2 in the finals.
The hot weather conditions in Beijing did little to take away the entertaining final which saw both teams playing an attacking game with so much flair and purpose. But the Nigerian defence was caught very high up in the pitch in the second half allowing Messi’s split pass on the left side set up Angel Di Maria for a date with Amruse. He did not dissapoint. He was the instant hero after scoring the only goal of the match which proved very valuable as Argentina walked away with the gold medal.
Nigerian Coach, Samson Siassia and his entire technical bench and playing unit were so devastated by the defeat but had to contend with settling for a silver medal.
