In Memoriam Peter Serry
Kenya’s football fraternity, the Kenyan Coaches, the leaders and youths that Peter Serry worked with at the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA), the Kenya Premier League, his recently formed Football for Peace Foundation and a huge circle of International organizations have lost a good Friend and remarkable person, who spent most of his life helping, others.
I have known the late Peter Serry for a long time and we worked together through MYSA between 1987-2008 in organizing young boys and girls who live in Mathare slums to use their sports talents constructively and profitably. Peter Serry has also been trained as a Football instructor by the Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB).
He was at the forefront of developing young soccer talents in Kenya and on many occasions travelled around the globe to share his experience from Dutch Coaching, Youth and Community Development with coaches in many countries from Suriname in the Caribbean to Vietnam and India in Asia.
We invite Kenyans and friends of Peter around the globe to use this page to send their condolences to honor our good friend Peter Serry for all the Good he did to our community and around the world.
MAY GOD REST HIM IN PEACE
Francis Kimanzi, Co-Founder of KISE.

Peter Serry Odera Hwenys
Eulogizing a True Change Maker and Star of Hope
A darling to Slum Kids of Kenya by Pius Obala
Serry had lived an amazing life even though it was rather short. Serry was a great friend; he was the kind of friend that stands by you when you need somebody to be there. He was Husband and a father. We were both young and age mates, he was my friend, he was not only my boss at MYSA, he was my mentor and my Hero.
What is it that we remember when we think of Serry? I think everyone who knows him very well would agree with me on this. It was his sense of humor. He was the kind of person that would make everyone laugh so hard that they’d end up crying. Who could forget about his happy joke? How about all his encouraging words and Jokes? Goodness! Just thinking about those jokes still makes me laugh. He was so out there when he starts those jokes. That is what I will truly miss about Serry. He could make me laugh when I am really sad. He always cheered me up when he knew I just had a bad day. That’s the trademark of serry. He always wanted to make people happy.
Serry’s death was sudden. I remember when I heard the news I simply could not believe it. I waited for miracle to come, but lord denied us one and then I said ‘Eli Eli Lama sabachthani’
Serry was too young but as it slowly occurred to me I have realized that Serry indeed lived his life wonderfully. Serry was well-loved and he had done so many things on earth and I’m sure he’ll do much more in heaven. I will forever be grateful to have known Worked with Serry. I will forever be grateful that Serry was there at the right place and at the right time to save lives Mathare Slums, in Kakuma Refugee camps, he was in Vietnam to teach soccer to the youth and mentor new brand of young leaders. He was a compass leader, he was to the North and to the South, He was to the East and to the West.
In Mathare he designed and modeled a brand of young talented leaders on the field and off the field. As pioneer player in Mathare United Serry, helped develop a team of leaders. I am a living examples of the people Serry helped shaped their live. He was my star of hope.
I will forever be grateful for spending 25 years of my life with a friend like him. I first met him at Kariobangi Catholic Church, he was a staunch catholic and believer of faith. All the memories I have shared with him will forever be cherished and remembered. Serry will forever live in my heart… In our hearts. In dholuo I do say “osiepna iwewa nang’o to podi waheri” R.I.P. Serry.
Serry is in heaven now. This is not the time for us to grieve his death but it’s our time to celebrate his life. Don’t ever forget Serry. He never wanted to see people cry. He wanted to make everyone happy. So at this moment when we are about to lay his body to rest, let’s all think back and remember how Serry touched our lives. How he made us laugh and how good Serry was as a person. This is not the moment for us to shed our tears but we should all be thankful that we were given the chance to have known a man named Peter Serry Odera Hwenys.
Serry will forever be missed but I know in the right time, I will meet Serry again. We will all meet Serry again and he’ll make us laugh in tears again.
I commiserate, and I salute and congratulate you brother. Rest Serry Rest in Peace.
OF PETER SERRY,
GOD BROKE OUR HEARTS TO PROVE THAT HE ONLY TAKES THE BEST…….REST IN PEACE BROTHER..
As we celebrate the magnificent life and unmatched passion for football of our friend Serry, it is my prayer that we will see the opening of a Peter Serry soccer school and an annual Peter Serry soccer challenge cup for the juniors he tirelessly dedicated his efforts to nature and see them through in development of soccer skills.
Dear family and friends of Peter,
It is with great shock and sadness that we take cognizance of the passing of Peter. In the months that we were in Kenya, Peter became a very good friend. He kept on impressing us with his kindness, enthusiasm, energy, brightness and humor. Having interesting conversations with Peter over dinner during the times he invited us to his family are and will always stay one of the best memories we have of Kenya. We will miss this moments with our great friend a lot.
We pass on our sincere condolences to all of you who were close to him and could enjoy even more his wonderful character.
Pierre Bataille and Steffi de Jong
MAY SERRY’S FAMILY DERIVE STRENGTH FROM THE ALMIGHTY AND REMEBER THAT ONLY GOOD THINGS ARE PLUCKED AWAY FROM US TO BE USED BY GOD. MAY HIS WILL BE GRANTED. AMEN
‘HEY’
That word first comes to my mind when thinking of Peter and the Decade we spent together on the Development of Young people in Football from the Mathare slums to the provinces of Mozambique, India or Vietnam are enormous. Peter conducted Football for Development courses for the KNVB since the year 2003 and has a huge international track record as KNVB-Instructor.
Hundreds of young men and women had training from Peter in various countries:
2003: Basic Coaching Course for Score in Zambia for the Kalusha Foundation
2004-2005: Football for Development Coaching Courses (2x) in Mozambique
2004-2005: Basic Coaching Course in Zambia (2x) for the Kalusha Foundation
2005: Basic Coaching Course for Rumbek Youth SA in Rumbek/South Sudan
2006: UEFA-B License in The Netherlands,
2006: Basic Courses at KYFA, Kisumu/Kenya
2006: Basic Coaching Courses (2x) at Diambars in Saly/Senegal
2007: Football for Development Course at NGO Magic Bus in Mumbai/India
2008: Football for Development Coaching Course in Hue/Vietnam
2008: KNVB-NIKE Women Coaching Courses (2x) in Mozambique
2008: KNVB-Stars in their Eyes Community Coaches Course in Stellenbosch/South Africa
2008: KNVB-NIKE Women Coaching Course Moving the Goalposts, Kilifi/Kenya
For our Football for Development Program he leaves a gap that can be filled in due time, but this unique person can never be replaced. His times in Holland were great, our times together in Kenya fantastic. Without Peter I would never have learned so much about African Music, with specialisation of the Congolese band Rumba Japan which he and Sarah enjoyed so much. Our few travels together were by times hilarious, specially the one to Mumbai in 2007.
When his times at MYSA came to an end, mainly due to his straight attitude as a leader and his sense of what is fair and what is definitely not, we took all his steps towards ‘independence’ together. In these days he turned into that younger brother that I never had before. Three to four times a week a short sms: ‘HEY’, knowing that I needed to call him for the daily affairs we had to deal with or for some inspiring discussion on the way forward in the ‘ever challenging but never dull landscape of Kenyan Football’.
Luckily Francis Kimanzi joined him in founding the Kenyan Institute of Soccer Education (KISE, also KImanzi-SErry), an organisation that can really start making a difference in Kenyan Football. From the Netherlands we assisted this fantastic initiative. We created this website together. Peter was the one to start KISE, position it and he lived to see it coming up. In his Spirit Kimanzi will have to continue it, knowing that Peter’s inspiration to make it work is looking over his shoulders.
I have promised Sarah we will continue KISE with Kimanzi and with other good young instructors who want follow in the footsteps of Peter Serry. My thoughts are with her and with the children, who will miss the inspiring father in the important moments of growing up.
‘HEY’. I miss you, brother.
Johan.
Dear Sarah, family and friends of Peter,
Our hearts go out to all, especially to Sarah and the children, our deepest condolences. Peter was an inspiration for us one and all. With a quick and brilliant smile and his trademark can do attitude, his commitment to young people across the world will be one of his greatest legacies. Peter touched so many of us; we will miss him deeply and honor his memory by continuing his good work.
Maria Bobenrieth and the entire Nike team
I was privileged to know Peter.
Sevaral times he was in Wijchen during the Exchange Programme between the MYSA under 13 teams and my Footballclub s.v. A.W.C. in Wijchen, the Netherlands.
Also on behalf of my KNVB job I met Peter and together we managed a coaching course in Rumbek (South Sudan) in december 2005, see pictures on this webpage.
My family and the Board and Members of AWC Wijchen pass on our deepest condolences to Sarah and their Children and the whole Footballfamily in Kenya
Piet Hubers, KNVB / AWC
I am deeply shocked about the death of Peter. He was the first African sport-for-development practitioner that I spent time with and his humility and humanity had (and continues to have) a deep impact on my thinking about sport. In many ways Peter personified the values, ethics and aspirations which underpin much sport-for-development work. A tragic loss.
Peter Serry and I met in the course of formal duties. Him appearing for MYSA and myself doing duty for Dutch Embassy, Nairobi. He wanted to play above board and he wanted to keep it non-controversial. His tragic death has left alot of rancour on our throats but am happy Peter left alot of true friends around the world. I should say (and kenyans hear me out), he was tribeless. Can we?
God rest his soul in eternal peace.
With Peter I have lost a very dear friend. A friend that I have come to admire over the many years we worked together in Kenya and through the regular contacts we had after I left for the Netherlands. It has been several weeks now since the tragic accident and still I refuse to accept that Peter will no longer answer his cell phone; that we can never again have a beer or watch a soccer game together, whenever I am passing through Nairobi. No more story telling about our project in Kakuma; no more jokes about the funny English our Sudanese friends spoke. No more . . Peter’s death has punched a hole in my sole that will always be there.
His life had just started. He was so proud of his family; never stopped talking about them. My deepest condolences to his wife Sarah and their three children. I will always remember Peter and when I do, I will be angry all over again about his premature death. But I will also be happy for all the people he has inspired, in Mathare slums, in Kakuma, in the Netherlands and all the other places he has travelled to. I am one of those people. Peter, thank you for that!
Dear Sarah, family and friends of Peter,
“Football is a part of I, when I play the world wakes up around me”. (Bob Marley)
Our hearts go out to all, especially to Sarah and the children, our deepest condolences. Peter was of big inspiration for you, for us, for MYSA, for Kenia, for football and many more people around the globe. I will remember his sklills a a coach ans manager, his commitment to his work and friends and his humor and friendship to he worked and lived with. We will miss him very much and will honor his memory by continuing his good work.

In memoriam.
I met Peter for the first time in 1998, during an advanced coaching course for Kenian footballcoaches. At that time Peter was very busy with MYSA and more specifique with the people “living” in Mathare Valley.
On that occasion Peter took me into the slums and showed me the way of surviving of the inhabitans. It impressed me very much and also his dedecation to the people. Living and breathing for the community.
What a great lost for his family and the community of Mathare Valley.
I am privileged to have known such a great man.
Ad Derksen KNVB Academy
I met Serry and instantly I saw a leader, a young person he demonstrated qualities not seen before in the Kenyan public arena, working within a team where his best always came out, humility including when doing very well(Serry would always take congratulations with simplicity and humility characteristic of the Monks of yesteryear, with lots of energy and dedication to whatever he did big or small, the will to assist others and to serve.
Over the years as a player in the MYSA league, for the senior team as Director of MYSA an organization which helped is starting while working as social workers for Undugu Society of Kenya an NGO Founded in the 70’s by Fr. Arnold Grol a Dutch missionary, Serry remained a Man, committed to improving the lives of the disadvantaged communities living in hardship areas working through sports.
I am a believer of life after and am sure we will certainly meet again, in the meantime on behalf of my family and friends we continue to pray for his young family,
We loved and respected you Serry for all that you represented which lis what lacks in the running of public in our Country, am sure we will see this carried forward through the KISE as a living testimony of the what you were as this is being seen through your closest friends.
Rest In Peace
Dear Sarah, family, Kimanzi en other friends,
The first time I worked together with Peter was november 2006 in Saly, Senegal. We had a very good time together. So when I heard that we should work together again last november2008 in Stellenbosch South Africa , I really was looking forward. Peter was very good and serious in his job as an instructor. But more than that he was a wonderfull person and we had so much fun together, joking the whole day. People said your are a wonderfull team together and so we were.
How is it possible that our “all the best man,see you!” at that last thursday 20th november was a farewell for ever? Peter you have a place in my heart.
I wish you all the energy to go on. With kindness and respect,
Rob Klein, instructor KNVB Academy, Holland
Dear Peter’s family members and friends,
We were all shocked to get the bad news a couple of weeks ago, and until now we are still so sad to accept the fact that we have lost such a good friend.
We met and worked with Peter in April 2008. It was a 10-day training on “football and development” facilitated by Peter and two of his colleagues, Roger Schouwenaar from KNVB and Ajay Shetty from Magic Bus. Within such a short period of time, Peter and his co-trainers strongly inspired the participants, especially in the way they could use football as a tool for development, with his brilliant ideas, profound insight and convincing voice. After the training, many youth football clubs have been established and are now functioning well in Quang Tri province.
We have learnt a lot from Serry - not only in terms of knowledge and skills, but also in the most professional and energetic attitude and contribution he always gave to the work.
We just want to say “Thank you so much, Peter!” for what he has done for us.

Dear Sarah
We were shocked, hearing that one of our dearest friends of Mysa, Peter Serry, died in a fire accident. The last 3 weeks, every day, our thoughts were with him and his family and all the friends Peter had, during his life. In all the years Peter visit Union, our football club in Nijmegen, Holland, we had a very enjoyable time talking about soccer of course, but also about raising his kids, He had a remarkable drive to develope himself and others around him. We hope that one day, his kidds will follow the way their father showed to many to reach the aims he had in life. We wish Sarah all the strenght she needs to rais her kids and manage all the things she is facing in the future. We will support you all in the comming years. Peter for always in our hearts and minds,
On behalf of the summer camp staff, the “Union more than soccer” foundation,
Martin van straaten, chairman.
Dear Sarah, family, Francis and other friends,
First , my deepest condoleances.
I was priviliged to work with Peter. First in Kenia and recently in Vietnam april 2008 .
The development coaching course in Vietnam was a great one . He became and award from the government because of his great drive to inspire the local coaches. The time we spent together was great and enjoyable. Ajay from Magic Bus , Tung and Phuong from MCNV and I will never forget this time. His explanation of the Dutch vision, play “Deep and Wide” made us every time smile . We laughed most of the time of the course. Without fun no learning.
He was not only a professional and good coach but also a great human being. He was my friend , we stil kept regular contact and we talked a lot about family and Kise . I will miss him a lot but I am sure that Peter is still coaching us.
Roger Schouwenaar, Instructor KNVB Academy
Dear Sarah, Kimanzi, family and Friends,
With heavy hearts we offer our heartfelt condolences on this tragic loss of our friend and brother Peter Swere. When I met Peter and Francis Kimanzi a few years ago, our relationship developed very quickly. We laughed and worked together in different times whether in Kenya, Zambia, Mozambique, South Africa or Holland. Peter was dedicated in all he did. Just a few days ago Peter was shouting ‘ hey mr chibwabwa’ (local vegetable relish in zambia) to me in Uganda for the CECAFA tournament when we met. How difficult it is to imagine, that we wont be sharing those moments again any time soon. So unreal. To say we will miss Peter and his wonderful service to the game may be an understatement because even in death he remains a great player, a dear friend, a family man who clearly epitomised the ‘good of the game’. Our hearts go out to his memory and our prayers to his beloved family.
On behalf of the Football Associasion of Zambia, The Kalusha Foundation and the fooball fraternity in Zambia, go well my friend.
Till we meet again.
Kalusha Bwalya.
Dear Sarah, family and friends
It was a great shock for me, the moment when I heard about the bad news.
I was privileged to have known Peter, such a friend and inspiration for MYSA and KISE
I met him in 2003 in Kenya for a Football for Development course and from that moment we became friends.
My deepest condolences to you Sarah and the children.

It was about a year ago when I met Peter in the Netherlands, at KNVB. I was planning a trip to Kenia/Zambia/Mozambique and he took the time to help me preparing well. After half an hour I had the feeling we knew each other for years!
That’s how I’ll remember you, you opened your heart for everyone.
During my visit last summer we met again in Kenia and Mozambique. You showed me your love for the game, the kids, the coaches and there development. Passion and humor were there all the time when you were around. I learned a lot, and we laughed a lot.
Family and friends, be proud on who he was and always will be.
Peter, si si si Obrigado!!

I am deeply shocked by the news of the death of Peter Serry. I had the honour of working with him twice during our refereeing courses for MYSA. Peter had the ability to bring people together and the moment you met him you knew you were meeting a new friend.
My deepest sympathy for Sarah and the children and for all the people who have to go on without his presence. May his inspiration, optimism and humour live on in the many good things he has established.
The world has lost a wonderful person.

To family, friends, and well wishers, pole sana and read Revelation 21 4-5.
Dear family and friends of Peter,
….Always a big smile on his face. There was never a dull moment when he was around. Peter Serry.
I met him on my first trip giving a coaching course (football) for women in Mozambique in the summer of 2008. Peter was an inspiring person, very clever and above all…Peter disliked injustice. Got angry when things went wrong because off the dishonesty concerning men’s actions.
I am glad that I have met him and feel very sorry that it was only for that moment in the summer of 2008. See you Peter.
I am shocked by the news that Peter died in the supermarket tragedy. Peter was an inspiring person who taught me several life leasons during my stay in Kenya in 2007/2008.
His smile, his positive energy and his admirable dedication to help everyone around him whenever he could will never be forgotten. Dear Peter, your life is taken, but the good memories never will. You were a true friend and I will always remember you like that.
Sarah, the kids, family, and friends, my deepest condoleances.
Maarten ‘Marto’ Ebbers (Holland).
I was shocked when I heard the sad news of Peter dying in this teribble fire.
As a Dutch coach at the course in Stellenbosch SA november 2008 , taking part in The Stars in their Eyes project I met Peter for the first time.
He was a dedicated instructor, but always with a laugh and a joke. He inspired people all over the world and was a great ambassador for MYSA.
The world will miss this great personality and nice guy.
My condolences to Sarah, his children, family and friends .

Still can not believe that I will not see you next time in Kenya or somewhere else.

The moments we shared were great ones.
Moments with good energy, with jokes and laughter.
Inspiring moments also, because we could exchanged our views.
I remember these moments as beautiful pictures.

Dear Sarah, family, Kimanzi and other friends,
Once again, my deepest condolences with your loss.
I was privileged to work with Peter Serry since 2000. The first time we met each other at the KNVB office I invited Peter Serry and Francis Kimanzi to teach the students at my school about their way of living in the slums of Nairobi.
Afterwards we organised the football match Mathare United versus the students of the Beatrix College.
From that time on we had a lot of great experiences. Later on, we continued our cooperation in Zambia and worked together with MYSA in Nairobi and KYFA in Kisumu. We conducted all kind of courses. During his education of TC II in the Netherlands, Peter felt as a member of my family. I will never forget his way of thinking, his laughing and his efforts to play “deep”. We were talking with optimism and humour about new ideas we were planning to work out. ‘’Go for development”, was his slogan. Not only to improve the standard of football but also the development of the talents of each individual.. Peter is a timeless role model for the youth and adults in- and outside the slums. Development of leadership is one of the objectives of MYSA. He showed us how to do it and to achieve this goal.
Peter, I want to thank you for supporting my daughter Steffi and her boyfriend Pierre with the implementation of their project for kids with disabilities.
I had the honour to represent the KNVB at the funeral of Peter. I saw sadness, but also pride in the eyes of Sarah, his kids and all his relatives and friends.
We were together with the same thoughts in our minds. We very much enjoyed his approach, based upon principles of living e.g. dignity, respect,… I hope that Sarah finds the similar strength as Peter used to have to go on with Lewis, Lizza and Fabian.
Peter, you will never leave my mind.
With Kindness and respect. Piet de Jong, instructor KNVB academy, the Netherlands

The warm and special memories (Peter guided me through Mathare and I took Peter to a dartstournament in Holland) stay though. As does his spirit.
My heartfelt condolences to Sarah and the kids,Serry was like a younger brother to me having grown up together in Huruma Flats.I saw Serry make major strides in life and he did alot of good things in the name of soccer. Dear Sarah family and friends
I have known Serry for a relatively short time but the time that I got to spend with him will stay with me forever. A good teacher, friend and above all a good human being. He was humble inspite of his immense talent and skill and was always eager to help others and share his knowledge, definitely a rare quality. He had an excellent sense of humour and the trainings I did with him were surely the most enjoyable ones.
His association with Magic Bus was for just eight days when he trained the staff.
It has been a long time since then but the staff still remembers him fondly and continues to apply his teachings.
Though he is no more with us, his inspiration and legacy lives on with all the lives he touched during his life.
Ajay
Death as yet again robbed us of a great leader who understood what it means working with people and especially young people and particulary young people in disadvantaged situations. You gave hope to many and we shall surely remember you for that. Having met you in different parts of the world in the name of sport for development and peace, I know from the bottom of my heart that the sport for development and peace fraternity shall surely miss your ever effective contributions and the peace and development ideas you ever preached. May your soul and the souls of all the departed rest in eternal peace. At EduSport Foundation we join the rest of the world in remembering you sir.

Dear Sarah and Coach Kimanzi!
How wonderful it was to work under you all, in MYSA. It’s a lot i learned, especially, how communities are developed through Sports, alongside developing Sports in communities…..
I treasure those moments… when i was also working under the leadership of Peter Serry as the Director of MYSA.
On behalf of CHRISC Rwanda, Many blessings and God’s care to Sarah and her beloved children..
